I realised then he was waiting for a response. I just wanted this to be over. What was the point in an evaluation when the biggest problem was the fucking manager couldn’t manage the fucking department.

“Do you have any issues with management?”

“No”

“Do you have any suggestions for management?”

“No”

“What do you think were challenges this year?”

“But, I tried this last year. To be honest, I need other people to change the way they are doing things too.”

I had grown tired of protecting their dumb asses and carrying their shit and doing them favours. At least today. At least right now. My head was throbbing. I was definitely going to take out some frustrations on the controller when I got home.

Bossman inhaled through his nose. He was always doing that before waving his dick around to say something that just meant more work for us.

“Do you think you could tell them what to do? Or rather, would they listen?”

My eyes darted around as I tried to think of an answer that didn’t make it look as if I was trying to think up an answer right off the cuff.

“Er, well it depends? I’ve helped a lot of people out but… in the end I don’t have the authority to tell people what to do.”

Right I’ve fucked it, haven’t I.

“There are some opportunities opening up, and we’re going to need more management staff, so we’re looking for experienced staff who would be interested in going on an internal course. You’ve been with us now for five years. You’ve got the experience, now you just need the skills, and the authority. Would you be interested?”

Well, shit.

I mean, that’s great, but why did I feel like I just dropped a huge combo?
