Arcade Street
Gunsmith went to check out the new arcade in Paris, France, by the name of Arcade Street.
Shout outs to Dorian, Friono, Salim, 2Pac, Yosuke, Rickyo95 and Rayden, who possibly has a more irritating Yuri than Giga D!
First things first, the arcade is great, industrial style like La Mythik (RIP). Perhaps it marks the return of the arcade? Although it should be pointed out that the majority of machines in this place are fighters, including MOTW, CVS2 and Tekken 6. It was very interesting to see two really young children, around ten years old who visited the arcade to play – something rare to see these days. They had a fun time, playing fighting games no less – is it a rarity or a sign of good things to come?
The arcade has two floors: Vewlix cabinets for XIII and BBCS, Astro cabinets for 2002um, SFIVAE, ST and 3S on one with MOW and DDR on the other.
Friono: “It’s crazy – SF players have gravitated towards XIII. There’s been a 50% increase in players over the last two weeks alone.”
Salim: “I still prefer 2002um. Anyone can play XIII – it’s that easy.”
Watching gameplay, I can agree that 2002um is in a way more accessible for the old skool but certainly less forgiving! If these players make the switch to XIII, they won’t look back because XIII is far easier to play.
More about actual KOF action next post.
Salim and Friono were both taking losses that day, as the other players are catching up (videos soon) and learning how to use K’. I get the impression that’s why Salim doesn’t really like XIII – there’s more chance of your average player beating a pro – although arguably that player still needs to know how to charge Raiden’s drop kick and do K”s cancel combo. It should be easy to see that compared to 2002um’s strict timing, XIII’s timing / combo system is dumbed down. Just like SFIV was for the mainstream, it’s still a good thing for the aspiring KOF player. I think the hardcore amongst us will quite easily agree that 2002um is a better game. It’s too early for the new KOF engine to compete. I’m reallly liking 2002um, it’s my new 98, so much so that I didn’t even touch XIII while in Paris. I’m not risking my timing getting confused until we get proper access to the game. 98FE is Nesica Live only so at the moment we just will not see it overseas unless it gets a console release…
I think 2002um is a better game too, and this is coming from a total 98 fanboy.
It was always going to be a problem with SNK, for some odd reason releasing 3 of their best KOF’s at once, 98FE(Which sounds like they dont have?) 2k2um and 13, I can see why players might goto 2k2um.
The K’ stuff in 13 looks worryingly easy to pick up, I bet you could learn it in a week or less, and then their is Raiden……
if ur still in france ask salim or someone how high the level can go in 13. For example a casual on Tekken 6 has a higher possibility of beating a pro than a casual beating a pro on 2k2um. . . how does kof13 fare in regards to this?
