Dunno it seems to me that JP's community is really too close to the past...thats why i d like to know about other asian countries (Westerns already like the game and it's good).. u know when 2k2um came out (console ,and later on arcade) there was so much infos about how ppl felt about the game, but now? just a few thoughts ... Mainland China has just 3 location where ppl can actually play the game so i don't blame them..but HK? ..what about Taiwan?Korea (if it got released there)?etc..?

Well all I can say (as I don't really have much chance to play KOF XIII) is that arcades that have the machines in Hong Kong are limited. People would prefer 2k2 or 2k2UM regardless. When a KOF 2k2 machine is $1 HKD and an XIII machine will cost $4 HKD normally, it's not going to get much play time (and most arcade goers are notorious cheapos who thinks anything above $2 HKD is expensive for a KOF machine). It's not like SNKP in Hong Kong aren't pushing hard for the game. They are (see vids from SNKP HK talking about the game), but I don't think the usual KOF players would notice what happened.

It has the XI symptoms here, but at least it's in better shape than XI. It was pretty much dead in 2 years, but XIII, I don't know. It'll definitely last longer than XII though - that game is gone now.

It's not just JP, it's a whole generation of players. We've covered this before: it's called the old skool. There is no new market for SNK, certainly not for Arcsys, even Capcom. The new kids are too lazy and will not put in the time to get good at fighting games. What's left is the old skool. And they are decreasing in number. And they are old. And they don't like strikers. And they are lazy. They like the same old system. And they have less time to play. And they are cheap. And they whinge a whole lot and can't even play. Mai? Seriously? Who gives a fuck? The fan who can't even play, that's who. Do the fans sit at the arcade and pump money into the machine? Nope. Do they buy licensed goods? Maybe. Which makes more money for SNK? Hmmmm. SNK still has to give a fuck about them.

Unless the new skool turns around, arcades will die with the old skool, all over the world.

However, the old skool is still alive, right now, and XII brought a lot of attention to the series, although in a back firing way. XIII, when patched, with good online, will do wonders for the community. We just need to wait and see.

Actually, thanks to a bunch of (obviously desperate) publicity moves, a huge chunk of BB players are casual gamers (because the "true" arcsys fan never moved out from GG in the first place). Obviously you are thinking "BB is a huge hit, they couldn't be desperate"... but that may be so now; when the first game was out there it was big mixed bag of opinions, so arc sys smelled the bad deal and went out of their way to give extra energy to the game.... I even remember the producer going out of his way and saying something like "if you like GG, please play BB as well"" in an interview, to bad I didn't cared to save the link for future reference (since I don't care about arc sys in the first place, har har).

Monetary speaking, is pretty much stupid to think that you can sniff of the casual gamers from Gundam games, 3D fighting and misc games (dancing and the like).... That would be like thinking that you can make magic lemonade on your back yard, and that it would be good enough to send out Coca Cola out of business.

Now, what SNK has to do "now" is somewhat hard to foresee. We can be naive and say "they should patch the game to fix it", but we can clearly see that SNK has absolutely no experience when it comes to patching machines (the few "updates" that they have had game wise where achieving by changing the hardware along the software, that's not what updating is); Namco or SEGA or whoever you are think off have specific "teams" of "pros" that go to the where the arcades are and do that soft bios level update (which required specific hardware back in the day) and after working they where in their way before people noticed the bother (aka, the machine turned off).... At the current present, and since SNK isn't the one who distributed the game, we can even assume that they don't even know where the XIII machines are located, plus we don't know if it would be "hard" to patch up the source code for XIII (though if it is only bug fixes, it shouldn't be too difficult).

Knowing SNK as I think I do, I wouldn't be surprised that they either intend to update the game once and be done with it, or not updating the game at all and leave things as they are... If they really are going to update it, they probably won't lift a finger until all of the new features that are being planned for the Taito boards are set in stone and working properly as they should (which might or might not take a long while).

i do understand that but i just cant see why old skool players just don't give up playing their old games, or at leat give it more than a chance.
Still i cant see why capcom old skool's player did """level up""" with SF4/SSF4 but snk's can't...
About HK..well it's pretty sad...after all their loc tests vids were the best, and it seemed that they actually liked the game as much as 2k2um...but again 4hkd for one credit is too much for them ..god that's really pissed me off...it's just 4hkd.. at least it seems that in western countries (where the game is available) they like the game >:)
i was wondering about china..have to ask on kofunion

Maybe they don't want to 'level up' because they feel the newer games aren't as good as the older ones?

I mean, if you were an arcade player who had a limited budget and had to choose a game to play and get better at, and had a choice between a new game with a reasonably interesting system but with poor balance and glitches everywhere, and an older game which has somewhat better balance and has proven itself over time to have the depth and stability needed to sustain competition, which would you pick?

Given that SNKP was the one that skimped on development time to rush out the game in time for Tougeki, blaming the players for abandoning the game seems ass-backwards.

i agree with ur statement here... i too blame SNKP in the first place cause they didnt give a fuck about glitches (from loctests) and balanced issues (from loctests).. i just hope SNKP is realizing that they re killing the game takuma1

What kind of arcade player still plays the same old game, specifically 98 or 2k2? A lazy, poor, ass.

To be even more precise, there are a whole load of players from the KOF 98 era, who can't do anything without Terry's Stand C (2hit) because their timing is so crap. They want to play something new, but they don't want to work or do cancel combos. They want Terry's 2 hit stand C and easy combos. 2k2 will do because you can still play it without using cancel combos, and as soon as anyone does, they'll walk away and say the game is "shit". Then there are the fans who can't even do 2 hit combos, but love anime graphics, trendy haircuts and boobs.

Poor balance? Please, the 2k2 um and XIII roster have no difference to KOF 98 - 5 top characters and that's all.

Sustain competition? What competition? The same old skool players fighting the same old skool players in the same arcade? Wait, they can't be bothered to leave their house and Kof online is shit. For a real KOF player, competition doesn't come into it unless you live in Asia or South America. From what I've seen in the UK and USA, it's the same 10 people per arcade that actually play KOF competitively. Jesus.

Again those old skool players that would LIKE to think they would be good at a new KOF, can't compete with those who can do cancel combos - these people will moan about any new game that has any sort of difficulty.

the bottom line: if you're a lazy, poor ass of a player, you won't like anything faster than SF. You can't even play, but you will moan and moan. Luckily SNKP don't give a fuck about you, because you have no money. The problem is when you actually HAVE money, and you like being able do dragon punches for 5 mins before turning on Modern Warfare 43. This is actually why XIII is more like 98/2k2um rather than the rebirth KOF they started to work on. Blame the fans? Damn right. SNK is stuck with trying to please these dickheads-

SNKP don't give a fuck about glitches? I think you should take that back. Go look at loketest reports and then show me which glitches stayed in the game. Balance? Again, there's always a top tier in every fighting game.

SNKP are not totally without blame, however. Whoever is in charge of their finances has decided they only get so much money to make the game. Notice the outsourcing to foreign programmers. How does a company control glitches when bits of the game are being made in different countries? It's a bloody hard project to take care of. SNKP made their videos and website and introduced people to the game, set up events etc. Now you're telling me they don't care? They didn't try? Please. It's quite simple. Skimp on development time? I doubt it's that simple - if you REALLY know SNKP it should be obvious that a) they didn't have enough money b) they fucked up. And that is beyond the KOF team's control. Their product simply wasn't good and impressive enough for the fans, for the press, for tougeki, for the new skool.

If the new president looks at SNKP's profits and sees that KOF is not making money, while pachinko and cell phone games are the future, why the hell should he pour money into an arcade game that is fucked, and nobody but old skool bitches are going to play, and only if it suits their retarded tastes? Blame SNKP, go on then, if you're living in a dream world where making games costs nothing.

You know what, the absolutely worst thing is that most of the so called SNKP fans spend most of their time doing things like moaning about SNK on the net, while the real fans spend their time actually playing KOF. Guess who gets heard? Guess who can influence SNKP to throw away a new system and bring back an old whore?

If I were you, stop worrying about SNKP's apparent attitude (it's only hearsay) and their so called fans (who talk shit), and just practice harder at being good at the game. If xiii online is shit, it's over - KOF will officially be a retro game, where old bitches meet with a ps2 and a crt tv. I like KOF, I'm biased, I'm in between being retarded and actually being good at the game. In fact, these days, I'm thinking of killing off all the fan related bullshit on this site, because a) it doesn't make SNKP any money (so they could actually make a better game) and b) I'd rather spend my time playing KOF then reading fanfics.

Disclaimer: I've given up smoking till Easter 2011. Also, I'd still like to make a movie.

wow! gunsmith went IN

i blame the part time fans. if your a true fan then you support the franchise even if its shit.

i remember going form shop to shop around london trying to find kof 12. i eventually got a brand new copy, played it for one day then put it on the shelf. i wasnt overwhelmed with the game but i was pleased because with the purchase.
a few weeks later i got the limited edition blazblue with the free music cd and combo tutorial dvd, played it to death for one day and while i was impressed with the game it still went straight to the shelf.

a few months later i got a secondhand tekken 6 and i admit i have been playing it online ever since.

when kof 13 gets released i will buy it, probabbly play it for a day then put it on the shelf.
may same like a waste of money to most people but i consider myself a true fan of kof so i will back the franchise.

To answer your question about bugs: there's at least one glitch that was found in a location test that remained in the final game. You can even see it in PenPen's initial batch of location test videos - it's the bug that causes the opponent to freeze when counterhit with Vice's dp+P, which is one of the bugs that caused an immediate disqualification at Tougeki, and which has basically ensured that no-one is ever going to use Vice. So yes, I think it's reasonable to say that they skimped on QA to get this game out.

You're not drawing an important distinction here. There are people who don't move on to new games because they can't handle complexity (who are basically a lost cause), and there are people who don't move on to new games because they think the old games are better. I believe the high-level Japanese/Asian scene is more or less in the latter camp. There's a damn good reason why no-one played KOF XII in Japan or Asia - it's because compared to KOF'98UM, 2K2UM and even XI, they didn't find the game interesting at all. The fact that SNKP decided to do a 'rebirth' had nothing to do with it - the fact that they did it BADLY had everything to do with it.

As for XIII, I actually think that the basic mechanics are on par with or better than 2K2 - it's just that it's lacking polish in a lot of areas. There are balance issues, yes. I'm not qualified to say if the balance is worse than 2K2UM or not, but just by eyeballing the lineups used in tourneys etc and watching high level match videos, it's seems to me that 2K2UM has better competitive variety in terms of character selection. Then again 2K2UM doesn't have a 1-move infinite to the best of my knowledge, nor does it have a juggle system that lets one of the characters do insane 75% combos with relative ease. Nor does it have glitches that basically make it so that one character in the game is basically unselectable. I think that's the crux of Dune's argument - heck, he said he likes the game, but he sees problems with it and he's not confident in SNKP's ability to support the game to the extent that it needs to be successful (i.e. supplant 2K2/98/UM).

This doesn't affect KOF exclusively, btw - I have some anecdotal evidence that a lot of ArcSys fans stuck with GGXX Accent Core even after BlazBlue came out, and I think a large part of that has to do with how they think it's not as interesting.

By the way, I absolutely do not believe that the right thing for SNKP to do is to drop everything and appeal to neophytes. There's no way you can do that without dumbing the game down and making it less interesting on the whole, and less complex games have short lifetimes. To give a more concrete example, take TF2 (a game which I'm quite familiar with). Everything about this game is simpler than its predecessor, and guess what - Valve has to resort to stupid gimmicky updates (lol hats) to keep casual players interested, and the scene is tiny compared to giants like Quake and Counter-Strike (two games which were designed with experts in mind from the get go; and guess what, they're fun to play casually too). The two Left 4 Dead games are even worse in this regard - the community has had to take it upon themselves to fix a game that's basically rubbish at high level.

So yeah, you end up with a game that makes tons of money initially, but after a year or so no-one is playing it. Good for financial survival I guess, but in terms of getting good games, pretty bad.

On a side note, I'm sorry, but what pop_squally said may be the silliest thing I've read this week. By your logic, being a Sonic fan, I should have shelled out money for Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006, the godawful Sonic 1 port for the GBA and that shitty Bioware Sonic RPG for the DS. I support my favourite developers, but I am above shelling out my money for things I immediately understand to be crap.

For what it's worth, I did buy KOF XII, although I resold it after about a month after realising that I didn't like it at all.

the bottom line: if you're a lazy, poor ass of a player, you won't like anything faster than SF. Damn right. SNK is stuck with trying to please these dickheads-
fiol wrote: i agree with ur statement here... i too blame SNKP in the first place cause they didnt give a fuck about glitches (from loctests) and balanced issues (from loctests).. i just hope SNKP is realizing that they re killing the game takuma1

Also, I'd still like to make a movie.
mate why i shouldnt blame snkp for those bugs, glitches, infinites? Ok they fixed something (ex. King's bug) but then ? they just kept the same shit as before .. Vice,Ralf,Hwa,Iori,Mature,Takuma Ex,Goro Ex ... c'on... they actually didnt give a fuck about those loc tests...
About the balance issues..thats true every kof has its own top tiers and everything BUT if u look at 2k2um there is a wide variety of chars used in high level matches, right? so something is indeed wrong with 13 ..nor that i care, but still...

i'm a snk fan, i do buy ,not download, every damn game i'm interested in ...i play kof everyday, i quite suck with it but i still play it and try..when i was in HK i spent a lot of money at the arcades ..more than an hour each damn day... when i ll go to China i ll do the same..why? cause i like KOF and i'm glad to spend money on this series. I will play kofxiii no matter what, i dont care about bugs & co.. to me it's a good game with its problem and all..but remember..i still play 97...so...

I had a rant. I think it was quite a good one!

Like I said, SNKP has to take some blame, but imo, not all of it.

We had glitches removed, but not all of them. Shall we go into the detail of fixing a code? How much does it cost? How skilled is the programmer? Blame SNKP, blame them for not having the resources, like blaming a homeless man for not being able to buy a house. SNKP fucked up, you can shout at them if you want, but I'm not sure there's any real point to it.

ST you make a good point about the reasons why people won't move on, I lumped them all together. Still, XII was a good game. It was unfinished, but so was 97. Fiol still plays 97. I want to play XII, but it's shit online, and XIII was supposed to be kof 98, so I'm waiting for that. After years of crappy buggy games, I'm a bit fed up with bending over for SNKP, but they're currently so fucked it's hard not to pity them.

I don't think 2k2 has a large top tier: K', Hinako, Kasumi. The rest seem quite a far way away?

Fiol, you still play 97. What are you looking for in a new KOF? Something similar to 97? I think ST's reference to GG players affirms what I was thinking, even though I didn't go into detail to differentiate, some people just want the same game but with new characters and tweaks. In a way that's what KOF has been doing all these years, but pissing off different sets of fans each time.

I probably go nuts for another 98, but the silly thing is, these old games can never be replaced, because they don't just represent a system, they also represent a time in your life when you were having fun. Of course there are exceptions but look at 98um. Why didn't the 98 fans like it? Why are they still playing 98? a) because 98 doesn't have Krauser or cancel combos. b) 98 can be played online (in some countries).

Shit I'm late for work
