So ehi ON American residents, evil has been defeated again no I mean, Obama has been confirmed for his 2nd mandate, from Europe we are generally relieved, personally for some reason the Republican candidate is always able to scare the fuck out of me.
It's too bad we have little action in the forum at the moment, I remember a few funny threads during the past elections. In the meantime, any comment about this result?

Re: Four more years
Lots and lots of mad people here in Florida, which was a really really tight race as far as popular vote went. Also lots of the demographic that Mittens was pandering to (xenophobic white men over 40, old people, trophy wives of said groups) stay here. It seems that the youth vote prevailed again. My home state (NC) went Republican, but usually any states under the Bible Belt do.
I am personally happy with the result. And Romney scared me too.

Re: Four more years
I came home from work just in time for his winning speech, but I was half tense the whole day about his fate.
I am from Asia but the President and his family really grew on me so much, it would be a shame for them to be replaced by Mitt Romney.
Although I'm a bit miffed that some people really went for Mittens... I mean REALLY?

Re: Four more years
I thought Romney was a bit of a wanker, so I'm pleased he didn't win. Looks to be another four years of gridlock though, what with the GOP still controlling the House, and I suspect they're going to just buckle down even more in their intransigence.
On another note, pleased to see that the progressive ballot initiatives seem to have done well across the country, and that Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock's attempt at legitimate election were shut down by the voting body.
Also for anyone feeling like schadenfreude at the moment: http://goptears.tumblr.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Four more years
Two days after the election, Florida was called for Obama. Huge turnout, as there were people still in line to vote at 1:30am in the morning, a couple of hours after the race was called and 6 hours after polls closed. That's dedication.

Re: Four more years
Watching the election coverage really drove home just how thinly spread the population is the US. They kept putting up a national map that broke down the votes by county (red for counties with more votes for Roms and blue for counties with more votes for Obama)- almost the entire country showed up red. But since Obama won over those 'islands' where population is highest (i.e. major cities) he ended up winning. Having traveled across New York State I knew it was laid out as pockets of civilization amidst a sea of low population areas - I had no idea the whole country was this way (although I suppose it makes sense).
Mittens - heh, is funny
SS: You still live in Seattle? If so, what do you think of them legalizing marijuana?? Since I hate burnouts I think I'd be rather annoyed

Re: Four more years
AW, I noticed that too. The counties with big cities (mostly) usually went Democrat. I was shock when I saw that my home county (Orange Co FL) went democrat, but all the surrounding counties went republican. The areas where Ft. Lauderdale & Miami are (Broward & Miami-Dade respectively) went blue too. The smaller counties with way smaller populations went with Mittens.
Just looked, and my home county in NC went to Obama by over 10%. Cray.

I'm not likely to use it, but my understanding is that the law basically turns it into something akin to alcohol, aka a drug that's legal to consume but not all the time. Also that this runs up against the federal position, so chances are it'll be stuck in the courts for a while.Apathy Wind wrote: SS: You still live in Seattle? Re: Four more years
My friend and I were heading home from a concert in Toronto that night and we stopped at a truck stop to get some 2am breakfast. I saw the news and we were both happy with the results.
Sometimes it sucks being Canadian, because USA politics effect us and we can't do a thing about it!
I am amused by those Republicans that are saying "That's it we're moving to Canada!"

Re: Four more years
Romney is probably better for Canada anyways. The protectionist policies of the Dems hurt us cuz we're a staple's economy.
Buuuuuuut, in spite of that. Woo! Obama.
That seems to be the general sentiment of Canadians.
You know what I don't get about America? How conservatives have to be social and fiscally conservative. In Canada our liberal party is socially liberally and fiscally conservative. Our Conservative party is conservative on both counts. Our "New" Democrats are well, a little out of touch.

Re: Four more years
My impression is that the two major parties in the US are actually to the right of what would be considered the 'left' in most other developed countries (making the cries of 'socialism' all the more ridiculous). I've certainly seen people put the Conservative party in the UK (for example) to the left of the Democrats.
Not sure I 100% agree with that but then again my impression of UK politics comes from watching British panel shows on Youtube, so what do I know, lol.
EDIT: Also, some interesting insights into the Romney defeat:

I remember being in Toronto during Obama's first campaign and seeing one of those HOPE t-shirts on sale in a store window. It was weird seeing a political candidate from another country so predominantly displayed - particular as they didn't have anything comparable for local politicians.
Mind you that may be due to no one wanting to wear something with Rob Ford's picture on it.
Although I think it's fair to point out that at one point of my life I knew more about Canadian politics then I did the American equivalent (I listened to alot of Toronto radio in my youth).
