Post your impressions about the PS2 KOF NeoWave here, that is, if you got the game already.

KofNeoWave Review PS2 by SnapYak

Post by SnapYak » Fri Nov 18, 2005 03:41

NeoWave my impression...

Neowave just feels like Kof2002 Lite to be quite honest.
The new modes should make the game more interesting but it just feels very ill-thought out.Like for instance...

The Super Cancel mode(1):- is the most fun mode just because some of the combo centric characters have remaining max mode combos from Kof2002. If the characters are not very combo heavy and cant deal out some sort of death combo with 3 super stocks then 1 or 2 combos have been added for instance...

Ryo having his ranbu cancellable on the 14th hit into a supercancel or into other special moves
Robert having his hcfhcf kick super cancellable on the 2nd hit into his ranbu.
Shermie having her hcf kick dashing grab cancellable into a super grab

etcetc.

Of course since the added combos are mostly to characters whose combos dont rank into the double digits thats fine and fairlly balanced but...

theres always the remaining characters that were combo heavy in the first place having additional combos which makes the game balance go out the window. -_-

example...

Iori stand c, hcb d, cancel to scumgale repeat combo till stocks run out.

GuardBreak Mode(2):- You perform hcf CD (one superstock) to perform an unblockable attack that causes the opponent to bounce off the wall for a free hit. Some of the characters can take advantage of this air time to perform whatever attack they see fit but....

Most of the moves/supers the characters have dont seem to hit after the wire off the wall -_-
Some characters like Terry Bogard can dash forward go hcfC (roundwave) into burnknuckle or perform a power geyser instead.

Its just that in an effort to balance the mode alot of things just wont hit or perhaps because the cast of characters havent been given any new moves to take advantage of this mode? (why didn't they add new special moves/supers exclusive to guardbreak mode like the isms in streetfiker alpha3).

MaxMode(3):- The hidden supers from kof2002,one super,in red health hsdm and max supers.
Personally I dont like this mode at all its fine if your character has a really great hidden super but the tradeoff is you CANT ROLL! That means your vunerable to certain characters unblockable attacks or other unblockable HSDMs when facing a challenger using the same mode. -_- (not fun)

Example of crap in this mode....

Choi will jump back across the wall away from u when he's down on red health then he will perform his HSDM! Since it randomly hits it will most likely smack u in the back. Then when choi gets up he'll run away back to the other side of the screen and wait for a chance to do another hsdm!!! :o

HSDMs usually whip what seems like 70% off your health in one go but really the lack of mobility just kills this mode for most characters.

Geese Howard....

At first I thought he was crap then after awhile I realised hes okay. He's based off aofighting2 so new sprite new moves etc thats good. Then again the bad is he seems incomplete his raging storm is actually an unblockable grab but not only does it have pathetic range but it also does poor damage.Geeses deadly rave fares better having huge amounts of invunerability frames (it can actually go right through Joe Higashis screw upper!). He has some tricks to keep him alive though.

Example...

Stand right next to an opponent who is on the ground. Perform Geeses jumping slash (you'll jump over there head) and you'll hit your opponent in the back, then perform the grab raging storm, then pause a second, perform a jumping CD or deadly rave when the opponent is in the air! :D

The secret characters exclusive to the PS2 version are.......

Kusanagi, MayLee, Seth, Angel (strong) and Rugal (toned down)

As well as the unlockable characters from the neowave atimoswave version...

Geese, Ramon, Vanessa, Orochi Yashiro, Orochi Shermie, Orochi Chris, Kim Kaphwan

The Graphics

Original atimoswave backgrounds and new stages in 3d. The new backgrounds usually have one stage set during the day then next round the stage is set at night. Otherwise the backgrounds are 1st stage then 2nd stage the same but set on a different angle... :/

I wasn't very impressed with the graphics actually unlike kof2003s which had the backgrounds change 3 times during the rounds rather than neowaves 2 times. Also the stages both original and 3d are simply not as interesting visually as kof94 rebouts or kof2003's backgrounds.

The Sound/Music

Original neowave soundtrack and arrange soundtrack which sounds a bit better. Most of the music seems far to out of place for a kof game and far to upbeat almost jazzy.

Gameplay

If you have played Kof2002 at an expert level I believe there is no point in getting this game for you. As a player you would be at a level where u can perform a combo then activate Max mode run forward or hyper jump and continue the rest of the combo. When you play Neowave you may find it far to toned down and by far to similar to kof2002 to warrent learning it in depth.

Bad things about Neowave

Theres slowdown on the new 3d stages the slowdown is reallyreally bad on the factory stage where pollution/mist is rising and fully animated in the background but also the other stages suffer slowdown as well. :(
Note:- I think the slowdown is worse when you use the sprite filtering in the options you had best leave that alone. -_-

Good things about Neowave

The new modes should keep your interest provided your not a kof2002 expert or u simply dont like the max mode in kof2002 or that u have to activate max mode to perform a hsdm.

The colour edit mode should keep u entertained. Yay Pink Benimaru. :)

The endless mode unlocks the secret characters providing more interest.

Overall Grade

If you have never played kof2002 (sad), find 2002's expert combos to hard (wuss) or want improved(?) new flashy 3d backdrops (graphics whore) then you'll want this.
Of course if your a kof fan you will buy this anyway (and kof94rebout) so the score is....

70% (if you have played kof2002)
85% (if you have not played kof2002)
