For fans of the game, you will LOVE this film. For those who know nothing of the game, it will seem a bit samey and nonsensical. It is afterall, a horror movie based on a game that announced it was based on horror movies and novels. What were you expecting?
As an avid fan, I was creaming my pants within 60 seconds as the film seemed to have a new plot but lots of things were very similar, and then I realised the film was not just paying homage to the game, but actually replayed scenes from the game, just with the film's protaganist in the shot. Certain shots are EXACTLY the same as in the game, from SH1 running after Cheryl in the very beginning to SH3's bloodied elevator. The CG is just stunning.
Looking at the film as a whole you can see how they took elements from each SH game (inc characters and monsters) and more or less stuck to the plot of SH1. While this is extremely cool, it- ... no, it is extremely cool, it is a fanboy's film, it satisfies in every aspect. If you haven't played the games, you can imagine how some things just don't make sense, even with the a lengthy explanation at one point.
If this director had worked on Street Fighter, I can imagine the world would be a different place right now. The director is known for music videos, and ripping off other director's styles, perhaps a copy and paste sort of director- which would explain why the film is so close to the game, perhaps not a bad thing at all in this case!
My only complaint is that sometimes the dialogue totally fails. At one point it's rather blatant that they were aiming for a tagline with one particular quote- I won't ruin it for you, it's that obvious. The main character seems to fluctuate in personality, bizarrely, at points, but in retrospect you could kind of explain it away using pyschology- but in my eyes that's a failure already- the character should seem to react naturally, behave in a way you should expect, and with good character building you could expect anything. But not in this case- she switches from terrified to calm in a split second, from screamer to preacher. Still, she has nice moist breasts.
This is a fanboy's film, let's not beat around the bush, if they figured they could draw in crowds based on SH's fanbase alone, I'm glad, coz I sure as well will be collecting the DVD. The movie's great... and Pyramid Head is just even more awesome onscreen than in the game, hard to believe but it's true!!!!

Of COURSE it fails. Its SUPPOSED to. Have you actually listened to the talking in the games? it aint shakespere. Its one more element of the game that they slapped into the movie.Gunsmith wrote:

and yes Pyramid head was awesome.
and they BETTER stick to James story like glue to the last detail if they do sequel.
