There's been interesting discussion over tactics and the point (if any) in sharing them.

You may have noticed, the site is changing direction, being more about playing KOF, rather than er... chatting about it.

If I made this forum private/locked etc, it would force people to register, which means I have a bigger list of KOF fans to contact - and it would be the serious ones, not the guys who just want to stare at Mai's boobs. This list would be updated with KOF info and events etc.

Or I could make it clan only muhahahah

I think this current system is fine, where you're allowed to read up on the forum, but you're required to register to talk. That way, people who actually want to contribute to the discussion have to take that next step up to talk.

Was kinda confused cos "Free for all" makes it sound like you're adopting a 4chan-esque system of allowing Anonymous to talk, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that as that will allow too many retards in. ;)

sharing is caring ... you can't expect the community to grow if you hold everything back (esp when the community kind of doesnt exist)

(unregistered) Lurkers don't contribute, they just suck - they don't need to take any other steps

I'm in a mood where I want a community that communicates and shares - why supply leeches with blood? I want to get more active and ask players what they are doing, get them to work on their skills. Hmmm am I beating a dead horse?

If there are only 200 people in the west who actively play KOF, I want to know all of them by name. If this community is dead, then hiding the forums will only force those who care to give up or join up, and then stay connected.

It's not just about promoting KOF, it's about raising the skill level of our community. I've seen some amazing SF players come out of nowhere, and they weren't asian. In fact, they didn't come out of nowhere, they came out of playing sessions and learning from forums.

My biggest concern with unregistered lurkers is that they have no reminder or notification to come back and see what's new

this can only be fixed if they register

99.9999% of the time when a forum ask me to register in order to access the goods I just rather ditch the place and search for sources somewhere else, and pretty much everyone is the same.

There is a "big meaning" in trying to tie down users, and remember that right now there are a lot of communities that offer all of the info to lurkers; unless absolutely every forum on existence changes it's format over night, pretty much everyone is going to figure that it''s faster to type in google "kof forum" than to create a new account and get a confirmation mail and read about what they want to know.

..... Heck, to further establish the point *goro There are a lot of times where I read these forums from another pc, and for that I don't access my account. Then when I get home I log in and talk about what grabbed my attention.... I could bet that making these forum private would be enough to drive me off from checking them constantly. Me; a "regular" :P

ten years ago, that would be absolutely true. There were hundreds of KOF sites.

How many English KOF sites are there now? 4?

Heck, I'd say the next best place to get KOF info is probably srk!

However, do any of these places offer their information as organised as ours? And without spam or idiots?

It is true about registering though - we are so lazy. Again, I'm beating a dead horse? If you google info and can't get it, what do you do then? Especially when it comes up in google cache for a forum that requires registration....

When I realllllly needed something, I'd register then never come back - but the thing is, then they had my email....

I've been lurking at DreamCancel for a while and for KOF XIII info, they're pretty damn organised.

If it wasn't for the fact that humans are tribal and simply won't unite as one unstoppable force, plus the fact that other KOF sites have come and gone, I'd shut this site down.

I just don't think you're plan would actually bring in new posters. It would drive down the amount of lurkers, but who cares, really. I mean, other sites collect their info into wikis and whatnot and make that easier to access than even going to a forum, let alone actually registering. If we want more people actually posting the only thing we need to do is lure people into the discussion by being knowledgeable and talking about the game.

Bit of history, I remember when I was at CX where 2k2 was fairly new and 2k3, Neowave, XI were all out and alive. That was one of the better places at the time (english speaking) that was thriving with info. This place was aswell at one point then it all ...stopped? After awhile CX started to die down because it got over ran with fanboys and the like which is why I left there and came here. I knew this place was kinda quite at the time but at least there werent no fanboys that ran the site then actual gameplay talk. It so happens to be a good time because Gun and CO are wanting to turn the site around which Im all for.

Seeing how things are now, I personally think it should be the way it is (unless there is away to look at 1 or 2 pages of threads in forums and then ask to register) because no one is going to sign up to something they cant taste (eg - see what they are signing up to). For all they know, we could have no info at all and they signed up for nothing...

I do feel (even tho is prob way late into Kof life) this website is heading into right direction. It also seems thats how Dreamcancel are taking it aswell, with Kof XIII their main focus. Id assume that once that game either doesnt do well on console or not many ppl in arcades play it, the site would dry up. The announcement of new Kof would prob keep them (and maybe us) alive and the cycle keeps going. But even if it does end up XIII, I do feel there is heaps to do in 98um, 2k2um and XIII that hasnt been researched yet, like 2k2 OG has been.

Long story short, keep it how it is and the real players / contributors would only benefit and no one else. Im sure there will come a point where ppl will post up on the forum, and when that happens see if we as a community to try and keep their interest. (EG - newcomers in 2k2um xbl forum.)

Hmmm

I saw a really good 2k2 wiki at srk but it (last time I checked) was unfinished. Probably the work of one guy... *sweatdrop

I agree, most ppl wouldn't bother, although some would be curious... but even after registering, a lurker wouldn't post. Hmmmm I still need to collect more contact details - but there's something else in the works for that.

We might as well continue this way.

Thanks to you all for your input!

Hey

In regards to Wiki, the SRK one was done by Emil who posts the good 2k2um (well any) kof matches. He stopped it cos it was way too time consuming AFAIK.

But DC have been getting theirs up and seems quite good so far. Here is an example.....

http://www.dreamcancel.com/wiki/index.p ... 282k2UM%29 Vice 2k2um.

Has even frame data on wake from different moves. Thats quality info!

I had a feeling it would be Emil; it's just awful he put all that work into a SF site. Good old politics probably had a good part to play there - he's got a bad rep (can't remember why) and when he came here was practically told to f off. It's a shame.

ok new thread time about wikis- go see!

Well at the least we can filter out the 2k2 OG character threads and other threads and make this into a specific 2k2UM forum first.

And at least have a thread for every character here I suppose - we don't want ourselves missing out on some characters.

Others have explained better than I can. All I will say is that I wouldn't be here if you had private forums, I'd probably be on DC right now.

If you make the forums private, you might as well close the site now.
