I have a flight on Saturday with a 1-hour layover in Japan. Cancelling + rebooking is going to potentially run me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Not sure if it's worth it...

Evidently if you have an iPhone and you purchase these apps you're donating to relief efforts.

After seeing Japan devastated in one too many fiction I am still kind of incredulous about everything.

I personally do not recommend donating to any organisation (that includes Lady Gaga) apart from the Red Cross.

I am still on the fence about donating because

a) Japan is quite a proud country and seems to prefer standing on its own
b) Japan is a rich country, we're not talking some third world ravaged state

Prime Minister Kan doesn't seem too up in arms about accepting handouts. :P

The thing with donations is that unless you "directly" donate to a well being organization then a fair share of what you donate is kept by whoever received your donation as "ways of affording costs"; this is that whoever handles the donations needs money to "transfer" or "mobilize" the money / goods acquired. In fact there are even cases were "after" whoever is handling the donations are "done" with delivering the money they still take donations for the sake of "rounding up costs". The sad reality of the world is that most good will efforts are done simply for the sake of profit (why do you think Telethons are so freaking huge?).

There is also the fact that companies "buy" a charitable image just by partaking in donation efforts.

In other words, if you really want to "donate" and get scammed as little as possible, you are better off buying products that support donating efforts, or if you directly donate to an institution you are better off donating somewhat "large" sums of moneys, if you just throw in 2 or 5 bucks odds says that the people you intend to donate aren't going to see a cent of your cash.

Indeed, charities are big business.

I noticed psn have a donate option on the store. This is probably where I will donate,as sony has already given $3.7 million....

I didn't cancel, no. That said I was only in Narita for what, forty minutes?
