{"id":856,"date":"2019-02-22T09:09:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T09:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.orochinagi.com\/?page_id=856"},"modified":"2024-02-29T13:20:37","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T13:20:37","slug":"time","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/orochinagi.com\/english\/topics\/time\/","title":{"rendered":"Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>telling the time<\/li>\n<li>24 hour clock<\/li>\n<li>Midnight Midday<\/li>\n<li>time difference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Telling the time<\/h1>\n<p>There are two methods: (a) direct and (b) annoying<\/p>\n<h5>A: DIRECT<\/h5>\n<p>AA:BB<\/p>\n<p>You can always read the time directly: &#8220;AA&#8221; + &#8220;BB&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>10:10 = ten ten<\/p>\n<p>10:17 = ten seventeen<\/p>\n<p>10:45 = ten forty five<\/p>\n<p>10:55 = ten fifty five<\/p>\n<p>BUT\u00a0<strong>10:01\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>x: ten one<\/p>\n<p>o: ten <strong>oh<\/strong> one<\/p>\n<p>xx:0x = xx: &#8220;oh&#8221; x<\/p>\n<p>10:09 = ten oh nine<\/p>\n<p>or we use the second method:<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orochinagi.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/tellingthetime.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orochinagi.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/tellingthetime.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orochinagi.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/tellingthetime.jpg 720w, https:\/\/orochinagi.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/tellingthetime-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5>B: annoying<\/h5>\n<p>or you can use <strong>past<\/strong> and <strong>to<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AA:BB<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;BB past AA&#8221; or\u00a0&#8220;BB to AA+1&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>10:26<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s twenty six <strong>past<\/strong> ten&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>10:40<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s twenty <strong>to<\/strong> eleven&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also, we usually say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>five past<\/li>\n<li>ten past<\/li>\n<li>quarter past<\/li>\n<li>half past<\/li>\n<li>twenty to<\/li>\n<li>quarter to<\/li>\n<li>ten to<\/li>\n<li>five to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>24 hour clock<\/h5>\n<p>The UK does not use the 24 hour clock but Europe does.<\/p>\n<p>To differentiate between morning and evening, we use AM and PM.<\/p>\n<p>02:00 = 2am<\/p>\n<p>14:00 = 2pm<\/p>\n<p>o&#8217;clock means there are no minutes and no precision of evening or morning<\/p>\n<p>o: See you at 2 o&#8217;clock<\/p>\n<p>x: See you at 2 o&#8217;clock pm<\/p>\n<p>x: See you at 2 o&#8217;clock 30<\/p>\n<p>If the context is clear we just say the number of the hour<\/p>\n<p>See you at <strong>2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We often stress that it&#8217;s not appropriate or we should be sleeping by emphasising &#8220;in the morning&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Why are you calling me now? It&#8217;s two in the morning!<\/em><\/p>\n<h5>Midday Midnight<\/h5>\n<p>00:00 = midnight<\/p>\n<p>12:00 = midday<\/p>\n<p><em>Some<\/em> people say quarter to midnight, or half past midday, which is correct but not common<\/p>\n<p><strong>00:20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>x: midnight 20<\/p>\n<p>o: twenty past midnight<\/p>\n<p>o: twelve twenty<\/p>\n<h5>Time difference<\/h5>\n<p>The day starts in the east.
