Maybe&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>To specify which was shorter, we can use the past simple:<\/p>\n<p>I watched the match <strong>while talking<\/strong> to my friend<br \/>\n= <strong>talking<\/strong> is longer<\/p>\n<p>I was taking a shower. The phone was ringing.<br \/>\nI was taking a shower <strong>and<\/strong> the phone was ringing.<br \/>\nI was taking to my boss <strong>and<\/strong> reading an email.<br \/>\n= both actions happen <strong>at same time for same duration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The phone was ringing <strong>while<\/strong> I was <strong>taking<\/strong> a shower.<br \/>\n= <strong>taking<\/strong> was longer (common sense)<\/p>\n<p>Remember: you <strong>present the image of the action (using past continuous)<\/strong> rather than a finished one (past simple).<\/p>\n<p>I was talking to my friend <strong>while<\/strong> <strong>watching<\/strong> a match<br \/>\n= <strong>watching<\/strong> was longer or same duration, but we can see the image of this person talking with their friend<\/p>\n<p>I was watching a match <strong>while talking<\/strong> to my friend<br \/>\n= <strong>talking<\/strong> is longer\u00a0(usually) and the talking is the more significant action.\u00a0 The match is less significant.<\/p>\n<h1>Advanced phrases<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>While + past continuous = during a longer period<\/li>\n<li>While + past simple\u00a0= during a specific point<\/li>\n<li>When + past continuous = at a specific point during an action<\/li>\n<li>When + past simple\u00a0= action finished at a specific point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can mix all these together to create specific descriptions<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I was training when he was shopping<\/li>\n<li>I was training while he was shopping<\/li>\n<li>I trained when he shopped<\/li>\n<li>I trained when he was shopping<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(1) I was doing this action at this specific point during the other action<\/p>\n<p>(2) I was doing this action during this other action<\/p>\n<p>(3) I finished this action at the time he did that action<\/p>\n<p>(4) I finished this action at the time he was doing that action<\/p>\n<p>Etc.<\/p>\n<h1>Best practice<\/h1>\n<p>Confused? Don&#8217;t worry. Usually, use <strong>while+ continuous<\/strong> to express the longer action. Use <strong>when+ past simple<\/strong> if you start the sentence with continuous. \u00a0Use either when or while with the same tense to show actions at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>I was watching TV when you called.<\/p>\n<p>I was in the bath when the postman knocked.<\/p>\n<p>We were in the cinema at 7.30.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#8217;t come on Saturday, he was working.<\/p>\n<p>While you were sleeping, he won the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>He was cycling home when it started to rain.<\/p>\n<p>I was sitting on the train when the dog farted.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget exceptions :<\/p>\n<p>x: I was understanding (this means I was sympathetic, not comprehending!)<\/p>\n<p>o: I understood<\/p>\n<p>x: I was wanting<\/p>\n<p>o: I wanted<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orochinagi.com\/english\/exam\/index.php\/quiz\/quiz_detail\/16\/Past+Continuous+\"><button><span style=\"color: white;\">Test Me!<\/span><\/button><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why use this?
