Using the Negative form<\/h1>\n

It is the same with the negative!<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

You meet your boss. They ask about a task you needed to do.<\/p>\n

I didn’t do it = action didn’t happen in the past, it’s OK, no consequence.<\/p>\n

I haven’t done it<\/strong> = you express that there is a consequence = I am embarrassed \/ I have to work more \/ there is a problem \/ etc<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

You are discussing what to do this weekend. You can say either:<\/p>\n

I spent all my money = the action happened in the past.<\/p>\n

I’ve spent all my money<\/strong> = I can’t buy anything \/ I need money!<\/p>\n

Present Perfect + Time\/action in the past<\/h1>\n

Present Perfect is used to talk about a consequence of an action in the present (NOW).<\/p>\n

We do not mention a time or action in the past because then the focus changes to the past.\u00a0 In that case, use past simple<\/strong> instead.<\/p>\n

I saw a movie yesterday = ok<\/p>\n

I have seen a movie yesterday = not ok<\/p>\n

I’ve seen a movie = ok<\/p>\n

I did my homework last night = ok<\/p>\n

I have done my homework last night = not ok<\/p>\n

I have done my homework =\u00a0 ok<\/p>\n

I cried when he arrived = ok<\/p>\n

I have cried when he arrived = not ok<\/p>\n

Q. Have you read my report?<\/p>\n

A. Yes, I have<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Expert use: the question implies a consequence on the present. The questioner wants a result.<\/p>\n

Should we use this for anyone? \u00a0Who are we talking to?\u00a0 We have to consider this before speaking.<\/p>\n

Have you read my report? (It’s really important to me, you’ll love it, you’ll learn something important from it, I’ll be annoyed if you haven’t read it, as a result you will be up-to-date)<\/p>\n

If you think that the subject is not important to someone, use the past simple instead.\u00a0 It shows deference.<\/p>\n

Hello Sir, did you read my report?<\/p>\n

This shows there is no consequence, there is no result to consider. \u00a0It’s not important.<\/p>\n
