Ok a little off topic, but not quite, as Terry Bogard fits into this, believe it or not.

So, in 2006, Paul Robertson released a short film that was based on a scrolling beat em up.  It makes several nods to the genre, anime and loads of things, with quite bizarre enemies and even more bizarre ways of destroying them.  It is, rather disturbing, and if I may say so, rather awesome.

Years later, Paul is hired to do some work on Scott Pilgrim: the game.  It features several nods to anime, comics, video games, and is rather cool, just without all the sick and twisted violence that made his films so good.  Yawn.  Fuck you corporates – you had no interest in making a boundary pushing game, you just wanted a safe profit, based on a safe movie.  Yawn.  It surprises me that there is a little buzz over the game as it is, it’s like people have never played a scrolling beat em up, but perhaps it’s just one of those play once then throw away games.  It does look nice, it plays, er… ok, with various ways to skank the enemy into dying, much like the classics, but I found myself getting bored quickly.  Perhaps I would have been happier if there was online co-op, but the game is lacking this feature.  If beat em ups are your thing, if you have some buddies that can come around, I’d recommend the game, if you haven’t already been tired out by Target Renegade/Double Dragon/Streets of Rage/Final Fight/TMNT/ etc etc etc

Of course, I can talk, playing the same 2d beat em up over and over again, but that’s my favourite type of game.  Most of my friends are tired of it.  I’m nearly tired of it.  But along with RPGs, I still find them fun.  If you’re a beat em up fan, then you’ll like the SPVT game, but I think you would have liked Paul’s game even more.

Just look at the youtube comments.  People were crying out for a Paul Robertson beat em up, not this candy ass movie tie in.  But what can you do?  Who knows, maybe Paul will get some cash and continue to build his reputation, until he can finally make his own game.  I hope this post helps somewhat in that regard.  At any rate, I have a feeling that his excellent movies will live on far longer than the Pilgrim game.

Well that was a lovely outlet for some pent up frustration.  Let’s watch some more of Paul’s work – in colour!

And don’t forget to watch out for 1:34 – TERRY BOGARD!  Kudos, Paul, Kudos!

Thx Apathy Wind for sharing the first clip on the forums.

It was a real shame once I found out the game would not feature online co-op. Me and some online friends were getting hyped on all getting that.
Though I’ll probably still check it out once it hits Live. River City Ransom is my all time favorite beat e’m up, and this game brings nothing but sweet nostalgia from it.
