My XP doesn’t actually seem to need reformatting. But as it’s the holidays I thought I’d try out that windows 7 beta. I was actually able to run the dvd from within XP and install into another partition, creating a dual boot machine, oooh tasty, I thought…
The installation was fairly painless, although there was no timer/time remaining to let you know how long your fingernails have grown or whether you really should take a poo now or wait just in case you have to press a button and waste even more time. I decided to take a poo and was pleasantly surprised to find I wasn’t suffering from food poisoning as I suspected. I also found the installation rebooting and getting on with it without any need for intervention. This was a little alarming- what exactly was being installed? Well, this was what the testing was for… It rebooted once more, and was done. I’m fairly sure this was faster than XP. Not sure about the poo though.

The default desktop is of a blue fish. In some water. How nice. Maybe it was trying to lull me into a soft mood, so I wouldn’t throw my mouse at the screen when it inevitably crashed. But so far, it was pleasant: transparent windows, glossy and useless gadgets like a clock for retards who can’t read digital time in the bottom right hand corner and AERO, AERO, oh my god, AERO!!! No, not the chocolate bar, but holy resource hogger Batman, a really super visual way of swapping between application windows and just keeping an eye on what application is doing what, when you hold windows and tab. Even when you press Alt and Tab, it’s got more pop ups than a virgin IE5. This is all very very nice, and actually makes you feel omnipotent, you know, all seeing, all powerful, but- just like belief in god, this is merely an act of conning yourself.
Why did I install this again? I suddenly realised something. This was the same pc, it could do all the same things, but just more visually- it was like playing with building blocks rather than typing things – it shouldn’t be easier, but it felt more fun. ”Hey! Come see this!” I shouted to my gf, “I’ve got a MAC!”
She pointed out that MAC users had this kind of toy OS for years. Damn, it IS fun. Shame my PC just isn’t powerful enough so I could watch the lego fly around at mach speed: P4 3.1ghz with 1.5 DDR ram and a PNY Nvidia Geforce 6200. Uh. Yes, I know, that USED to be hot. But hang on, my XP is running pretty well actually; it boots up pretty damn fast due to using EasyClean 2.0 and Diskkeeper 8.0. Did I need to upgrade my OS? Uh… well, you know, new toys…
I played some more. Windows update installed ALL of my hardware drivers – which was a bit scary to be honest, but very nice. But then there was some weird scroll flickering on IE8, which I have to mention, loaded like LIGHTNING. I refrained from masturbating over the prospect of installing Opera, and noticed my logitech S510 mouse wheel wasn’t installed properly – the wheel can tilt left or right, which I use to go back or forward when surfing. Uhhhh ‘this software has not been tested on your OS’. Oh crap. And then… I discovered… I had no sound.
At this point I thought, well, maybe when I stop spending money on alcohol, I’ll upgrade my pc hardware and maybe get that 64 bit system thingy and lots of ram, so I can make multitasking more fun. Have you seen the Ubuntu Comiz cube? And you thought all you needed to do was switch applications. Hah! Wobbly windows mofo, it’s all about wobbly windows and fire! FIRE! That’s what I need a pc for! FIREEEE
Seriously though, Windows 7 is meant to be less resource free and has superfetch, which loads your most used apps quicker… and… well Ubuntu is free… but Windows 7 is free to try until August… if you have a spare partition in your boot drive, you can try it safely. Er… don’t quote me on that.

Cool article Alan.
I gave this a go. It really is nice, did you try the aero shake? Lulz -but still have to wait for some apps to be compatible – or just upgrade everything *sigh* I wanna have a constantly refreshing background too!
Ooooh…so Gunsmith isn’t you? You didn’t write this then Alan?
Hell no, I wrote this! Isn’t it obvious?
